Rev. Michelle Slater, Minister of Word, Sacrament and Pastoral Care
Michelle’s mission is to lead people of all ages to know and experience the love of God,
and to grow as followers of Jesus.
Her goals are children, youth and adults who:
- know and live the biblical story
- know and share the good news of Jesus Christ
- have a relationship with God, both individual and communal
- belong to a small group in the congregation
- share their gifts: time, skills, money, service
- practice prayer and other spiritual practices
- know a basic repertoire of hymns, responses, and prayers
- care for and build one another up in the Body of Christ
- worship weekly
Her gifts include vital and faithful worship, teaching the faith, leadership development, and vision development and leadership.

She thinks she has the best job in the world.Tressa welcomes you to be in touch with any questions about our children's Church and Family programs. Or maybe you'd like to volunteer in our Children's Church? Or in a non-leadership way - like being our Supplies Coordinator? Or Birthday Card fairy?
We are always welcoming Senior Highs to Seniors, women and men, as leaders and support leaders for our programs. We offer training and support, and all volunteers are required to satisfy a criminal records check (which is free).

Gordon Miller, Music Minister
Gordon’s musical background includes training through the Canadian Armed Forces, School of Music. He is an accomplished trumpet player, pianist and choral director. His contemporary and jazz styling on piano and guitar frequently come through on Sunday mornings. A life-long United Church adherent as a musician and musical director, he embodies a deep respect and appreciation for the musical traditions of the church.
Brianne De Man, Youth Leader
Brianne is a graduate student at UVic studying for her Master of Public Health. She did my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and grew up in the neighbouring community of Fort Saskatchewan. Her dad was a United Church Minister there for 12 years before he passed away in 2007. She was fortunate enough to grow up in the church where she was able to serve through her passions for music and working with youth. She was a co-leader of the First United Church (Fort Saskatchewan) youth group for two years before she moved to Victoria, and have been working with the children and youth ministries at OBUC since she started attending in September 2014. She is excited to embark on this new journey with an energized congregation and a wonderful group of youth!

Khalilah Alwani, Coordinator of Communications
In this role, Khalilah seeks to support communication and thus, activity, connection and relationship building, amongst members of the congregation, and between Oak Bay United Church and other diverse communities.
Khalilah has, with gratitude, lived the majority of her life thus far on unceded Coast Salish Territories, with mixed South Asian and western European ancestry. She is passionate about community health, social justice, and cultural arts, as well as the practices of dance, cooking, yoga, and meditation. You can often find her in the garden hanging out with plants/worshiping the divine.

We recently restructured the way we govern our organization and engage our ministries. Our focus was to spend more of our gifts, time, energy, money and resources on ministry rather than administration and management.
