A place for everyone, where God's love wins

According to the church calendar, we are now in the season called “Ordinary Time”. It’s a long season, spanning from the celebration of Pentecost on June 9th, to the first Sunday of Advent on December 1st!

In Godly Play, the resource that Oak Bay United enjoys for children's ministry, "Ordinary Time" is called "The Great Growing Season", as we grow into the way as followers of Jesus. Continue to grow with us, and one another this summer!

Ordinary Daze

This season is called “ordinary” from the word ordinal (as in “ordinal numbers”: first, second, third, etc). The Sundays after the celebration of Pentecost are called “the [first, second, third, etc] Sunday after Pentecost", so the season is called “Ordinary Time”.

But it also feels “ordinary” in the other, more common sense of the word: normal, with no special or distinctive features. Sometimes that very ordinariness is a comfort. After all, life is often ordinary. We get up, make our tea or coffee, do what needs to be done for the day, return home, rest, and do it all again. Ordinary time, ordinary days, ordinary moments, bring the big moments of our life together into a whole.

Jesus did some of his most amazing teaching while doing quite ordinary things, like eating, walking, even spitting. Jesus’ ministry was actually quite ordinary as he was with people, day in and day out. The extraordinary events of Jesus' dying and rising gave new meaning to the ordinary - for Jesus and for us.
