Honouring Oak Bay United – Betty Forgie

Sometimes I marvel at how God works in his mysterious ways. For example, how our paths are guided without our having an active participation in which direction we will go. We think we are in direct control; however, “God” has led me down some paths I would never have picked myself.

Were there lessons to be learned? Compassion and humility to be felt? Understanding and patience to be understood? For me, definitely, all of the above.

Give Away Your Anger PDF Print E-mail

I was going to preach this morning on some of the people who I met on my trip to Israel – the people who, like Jacob are wounded, in pain, angry and yet purposeful – stridently seeking justice. Someday I will preach that sermon – but not today.

Instead I found myself drawn to a book called "I Shall Not Hate", written by Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish – it is a book about giving away anger, about forgiveness, about receiving God's blessing and claiming hope.

Baptismal Ministry – Food for Thought (An excerpt from the Alban Institute Newsletter) PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 24 April 2010 14:29

Baptismal ministry is discipleship where all baptized share in Christ's identity and mission as the priesthood of all believers. Through baptism each person receives gifts for ministry through the Holy Spirit—gifts to be embraced and lived out in the church and in the world. Baptismal ministry maintains that the calling of each person is of equal worth and essential for the fullness of mission—that is, to restore all people to unity with God. Baptismal ministry maintains that the local community is the primary context for formation, ministry, and mission. Beyond the congregation, baptismal ministry encompasses the whole work of the whole people of God in all times and all places.

Help Me to Believe in Beginnings PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 02 May 2010 00:00

God of history and of my heart, so much has happened to me during these whirlwind days:
I've known death and birth;
I've been brave and scared;
I've hurt, I've helped;
I've been honest, I've lied;
I've destroyed, I've created;
I've been with people, I've been lonely;
I’ve been loyal, I've betrayed;
I've decided, I've waffled;
I've laughed and I've cried.
You know my frail heart and my frayed history - and now another day begins.

O God, help me to believe in beginnings and in my beginning again, no matter how often I've failed before.
