Saving Us: Climate Change Book Study
Phyllis Beardsley will lead 5 discussion sessions about the book Saving Us by Christian climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. Katharine says that the most important action we can take for the climate is to TALK about it. This is difficult when it seems that everyone is worried but nobody is talking! This study group will help us to feel less alone with our worries and to decide together about what action to take. We will discuss one section of the book each session. You are warmly welcome to join us for any or all of these sessions.
Tuesdays April 14 and 28, May 5 and 19, and June 2
5-6:30 pm in the Community Hall (enter via Mitchell St. side door)
For more information and to get a copy of the book, email Phyllis or speak to her at church!
Community Storytelling and Art: Peace Dancer
In honour of Earth Day 2026, join us for an all-ages community storytelling and art event, featuring author Robert “Lucky” Budd.
The event will begin at 2 pm (doors at 1:45 pm) in the OBUC Sanctuary, with Budd sharing Peace Dancer, a recounting of the traditional Northwest Coastal legend of a great flood. Sent in response to disrespectful behaviour, the flood causes the people to re-examine their values and to re-commit to living in respect and harmony with all life.
Afterwards, all are invited to the downstairs Community Hall for hands-on art activities for all ages. All art materials will be provided, and light refreshments will be available.
This event is suitable for all ages. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
Entry to the Oak Bay United Church Sanctuary is via Granite St.
Accessibility: for those with limited mobility, the OBUC Sanctuary can be reached by an accessibility lift, located off Granite Street, just east of the main entrance ramp.

Lenten Study: Teach Me To Pray
Lenten Study: Teach Me To Pray
Who is this for? Anyone who is interested in learning about different styles of prayer. There isn’t just one way to pray, so this series of workshops will introduce some of the many styles of praying.
What is this about? Each week, you’ll have an opportunity to be introduced to a different type of prayer, learn a little bit about its history, then have a time to try it out for yourself. You’ll also go home with a take-home sheet so you can use it again and share it with others.
When is this being held? Starting Tuesday, Feb. 24 and running each week through the season of Lent (March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31). Sessions will be from 5-6:30 pm, allowing time for discussion.
Where? The chapel (may be moved to the community hall if there are numerous participants. Please let Rev. Sarah know if you are planning to attend so that we have enough hand-outs, as well as space).
Why? Several people have expressed that they aren’t sure how to go about praying, or what to say, or what to do. These workshops will introduce participants to some different styles of prayer and give them the tools to hopefully become more comfortable with it.
Oak Bay Meditation Group
Come and Find the Quiet Centre
Come and take some time to sit in silence. Together we will explore two contemplative practices: Contemplative Reading (Lectio Divina), and the Centering Prayer. We will be guided through both practices, and there will be time to discuss the process. All are welcome! No prior experience is necessary. Please tell your friends, or better still, bring them along! No registration required.
Held in the OBUC Chapel (entry via Kitchen door, off of the parking lot). Please arrive by 9:55 am.
Linda Mulhall and Sandi Patterson are on the Steering Committee for the Contemplative Network of Greater Victoria. This event is sponsored by Oak Bay United and The Contemplative Network. For further information please contact Linda Mulhall or Rev. Sarah Fanning.

Village Workshop Series: Understanding the Village
Village Workshop Series: Building Bridges Through Understanding the Village
On Saturday, March 14, Oak Bay United Church and St Mary's Anglican Church will host Kathi Camilleri’s “Building Bridges Through Understanding the Village,” an experiential workshop that helps us explore our own, personal role in supporting the revival of the values that worked so beautifully in indigenous villages for thousands of years. As a group, we also explore in‐depth the effects of Residential Schools and Canada’s Policy of Assimilation on Indigenous communities.
This full-day workshop will be held in the OBUC downstairs Community Hall from 9 am to 4 pm. The Hall may be accessed via the Granite St. entrance to the left/east of the main entrance ramp.
This is a repeat of the successful event held on Oct. 28., and is co-hosted by OBUC, St. Mary’s Anglican Church, and ReconciliACTION Oak Bay Network. Lunch and refreshments included. Cost is $30. If cost is a barrier, please let us know at the time of registration.
Lunch will be provided by Songhees Catering, owned and operated by Songhees First Nation. Using fresh local ingredients, they create a delicious modern take on Songhees cultural tradition. When you register, you will be able to select which protein choice/entree you would like: tofu (vegan), chicken, salmon, or prawns.
To register, you may either speak to Felicite Stairs directly or contact the Oak Bay United Church Office by hitting the button below.
Payment may be made by cash or cheque to the OBUC office during regular office hours or given directly to Felicite Stairs at Sunday worship. Payment may also be made by e-transfer. For e-transfer instruction, please inquire with the Church Office at the time of registration.
