Author Talk: Democracy's Second Act

Doing Democracy Differently: How to Restore Power to the Public

All are invited to a pre-election talk that addresses what the public can do to get local governments working better for everyone!
Voter turnout in local elections is generally poor, some elected offices get filled by acclamation, trust in decision-making processes is low, and conflict has become endemic. Democracy doesn’t have to be this way. Journalist Richard Johnson, co-author of the inspiring new book Democracy’s Second Act: Why Politics Needs the Public, aims to get at the practical measures we can adopt at the local level to restore our local democracy to health and improve the quality and durability of local decision-making. A conversation with Johnson, facilitated by award-winning former legislative bureau chief for the Vancouver Sun and CTV BC and former CHEK news anchor Jim Beatty, will follow the presentation.

Hosted jointly by Oak Bay United Church and the Community Association of Oak Bay.

Location: The OBUC Sanctuary may be accessed via Granite St. For those with mobility limitations, the level ground entry to the accessibility lift may be found on the left (east side) of the main entrance ramp.

Let's Talk About Death: Downsizing and dealing with our possessions

All new topics this fall! Rev. Sarah hosts a second series of learning and discussion opportunities to help us plan for our eventual death. Each session will take place in the Sanctuary. Bring a bag lunch—we will provide coffee, tea, goodies, the space and an expert from whom to learn:

  • Wednesday, Sep. 16 1-2:30 pm: downsizing and dealing with our possessions, with a guest from Changing Spaces

  • Wednesday, Oct. 21 1-2:30 pm: MAID, with guests from Hospice Victoria

  • Wednesday, Nov. 18 1-2:30 pm: writing your own eulogy and planning your funeral, with Rev. Sarah

Advance registration requested so that we can prepare enough resources and refreshments to share. Register by signing up on the clipboard in the Narthex/entryway, or by emailing the office. Suggested donation of $5/person per session to help cover costs of goodies, payable at the door by cash or debit/credit.

Accessibility lift available through the Granite street door to the downstairs Community Hall, east of the main entrance ramp.

Fall Study Series: Exploring World Religions

Fall Study Series: Exploring World Religions

“Each of the world’s religions may seem foreign to ‘outsiders,’ but to an ‘insider,’ each represents a means by which both a particular society and creation as a whole can be understood more completely.”

Our adult study series this fall is an opportunity to come and explore another six of the world religions, and to learn more about faith in our neighbours. Each week will begin with a prayer from the tradition that is being focussed on, and participants will have an opportunity to share with one another their past experiences with that faith tradition. We will then view a video together that explores the history, texts, traditions and holidays of each faith, and end with some questions to think about and reflect upon. The hope is that as we explore some of the major religions of the world, we will gain a renewed understanding of the diverse world around us and of each other as human beings. Come and learn more about other faiths. All are welcome! The study group will meet Wednesdays in the Community Hall from 5-7 pm. Each session in stand-alone, so you do not need to attend all of them.

  • September 23 Shinto

  • October 7 Confucianism & Taoism

  • October 14 African & African American Religion

  • October 21 Religions of Small Societies

  • November 4 Scepticism & Religious Relativism

  • November 11 OR 17 (date tbc)Native American Spirituality
